Whether you’re in Sydney, Australia for a couple of days or more you’ll want to make sure you do the Coogee to Bondi coastal walk. Where to start
The best way to get to the start of the walk would be to jump on the public bus to Coogee beach, more specifically, Arden St at Coogee Bay Rd bus stop. There are frequent buses from all over the city and this bus stop happens to be just across the street from the start point of the walk. Upon arrival, cross the road and with the beach in front of you, turn left to the far end of the beach. From there, a path will lead up around the edge of the cliff and you’ll be on your way.
Points of interest
As you follow the coastal path, you will pass many breathtaking viewpoints, beaches, coves and seawater pools. A few to watch out for (you won’t miss them) are Gordon’s Bay, Bundock park, Clovelly beach, Shark Point, Bronte beach, Tamarama beach and of course, Bondi beach.
Both Bronte and Bondi have public swimming pools which make for a unique swimming experience where you may even get thrashed by waves if you choose your lane wisely (or not so wisely depending on how you look at it!). For only $7 AUD for an adult swim it’s well worth it if you have the time to spare.
Refreshments & facilities
Most of the beaches have facilities of some description including toilets, changing rooms, picnic areas, benches and even free to use electric BBQs. You’ll also find yourself coming across cafes and restaurants, especially when you reach the larger beaches of Bronte and Bondi. Bronte has a few lovely little cafes set back off the beach park including a little fish and chip shop which is a great place to stop for lunch. Bondi is much larger and offers a full high street with numerous cafes, bars and restaurants in addition to a few places on the beach itself.
Level of difficulty
The coastal walk is considered moderate in intensity with some hills and steps in places. The path is paved the whole way along and as long as you have a moderate level of general fitness you’ll be able to manage it easily.
What to take & wear
As the whole walk is paved, just a normal pair of trainers or comfortable shoes would be more than enough. Also consider a hat and sunscreen as most of the walk is very open to the elements plus water to keep you hydrated.
All in all it’s an incredible walk with unbeatable views of the coastline and best of all – it’s completely free! The walk can take anywhere between 1 and 2 hours depending on how often you stop. However, you could easily stretch it out over a day, making stops at the beaches along the way for sunbathing and swimming.
